GUIDED FISHING

Anglers come from all over the world to experience the thrill of fishing Wyoming’s vast network of rivers and streams. The Greys River is a 62-mile tributary of the legendary Snake River.

From the convergence of three small streams in Yellowstone National Park, the Snake River is formed, winding down for over 1,000 miles before joining with the Columbia River and emptying into the Pacific Ocean in Washington. The Greys River forms in the Wyoming Range, about 45 minutes south of Alpine in Lincoln County, Wyoming.

Casting a line into the Greys River is one of the most sought-after fishing sites in the world. The river played host to the 1997 World Fly Fishing Championships. The Little Greys River is its largest tributary and serves as a home to an abundance of the famed Snake River Fine Spotted Cutthroat trout, as well as brown trout. The stunning landscape is one of the most quintessential fly fishing backdrops and should be on the bucket list of every angler.

FISHING IN THE GREYS RIVER

The Grey’s River is home to one of the most famous species of trout in the world: the Snake River Fine Spotted Cutthroat Trout. Cutthroat trout bite a wide variety of artificial flies and are one of the most sought-after species of trout for anglers to fish. There are other species of trout found in the Snake River and its tributaries like the Grey’s River like Rainbow and Brown, but Cutthroats dominate the waters. Our enthusiastic and friendly guides can take you to an extraordinary number of fantastic fishing spots along the entire eight miles of Little Greys River.

Don’t be surprised if you are in a new spot each time you go out. The vast majority of fishing in the Little Greys or its tributaries is done bankside, though if the water is calm enough you are welcome to wade in. The vast majority of people catch and release but you are allowed to harvest the max number that you can catch. KJ’s Alpine store has the licenses you’ll need. Hook and lure fishing is also available.

WYOMING FLY FISHING

While fly fishing is certainly one of the biggest reasons people flock to the Greys River, people fish with a variety of tackle setups.  Live bait is not permitted anywhere along the Snake River. If catch and release is your thing, it’s best to come during the cooler months and times of day as water that is over 75 degrees reduces the fish’s chances of surviving the stress of being caught. The fishing season in Wyoming generally runs from mid-May to the beginning of November. While it isn’t illegal to fish other times during the year, winter weather will make it more challenging. Learn more about our Fly Fishing trips.

WHAT TO BRING

Bring your rods, tackle box, and your favorite gear. Dress in the appropriate layers in neutral colors. We do not typically provide fishing gear, as most people have strong preferences for their own. We do, however, have a few rods that people who just want to put a hook in the water in a much more casual manner are welcome to use.

WYOMING FISHING LICENSE

To fish in the Little Greys River, you will need a Wyoming fishing license. These can be obtained either online through the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s website or at KJ’s in downtown Alpine. Most people find it easiest to acquire one online.

Wyoming fishing can be addictive, and if you think you might spend more than 7 days per year fishing in the marvelous waters that Wyoming has to offer, you’re probably better off getting a 12-month license. Wyoming fishing licenses are available for one-day, five-day, or 12-month time periods. Once registered, you can purchase individual licenses for fishing and either individual or group licenses for hunting. The price for a daily license is $14, and you will also need a conservation stamp. Information about the fishing regulations in Wyoming can be found here.
